SHW Helps Save Beloved Eastbourne Community Centre
Building Consultancy, Development, SHW News
SHW’s Building Consultancy Department in Eastbourne has recently provided Project Management, Principal Designer, Full Design & Contract Administration services to save a beloved local community centre in Meads, Eastbourne.

The BCD team were appointed by The Trustees as Project Managers to oversee the whole restoration & refurbishment, and as the name suggests, ‘save the hall’. The ‘rot to repair’ scheme means that repair and refurbishment can reverse the dilapidation making it fit for the 21st century and in doing so there should be plenty more years of enjoyment left in this iconic building.
The Hall was closed on 24th November 2023 due to several health and safety concerns.
The agreed brief was the client to retain and restore as much of the original fabric as possible. The scope of works included re-roofing, repairs to the bell tower & dormer windows, window replacement, stonework & masonry repairs, provision of new toilets, provision of disabled access, landscaping, provision of a new kitchen, upgrading services throughout, refurbishment of parquet flooring throughout, full internal & external refurbishment and redecoration.
SHW’s appointment was made in Q2 2024 and owing to the strict timescales around Government funding for the works, all construction works needed to be completed and accounts agreed before end of March 2025.
At the time of appointment, our client commented;
“After interviewing several companies and assessing their tenders, the trustees are looking forward to working with partner Adam Jordan and his colleagues at SHW. With a track record of projects big and small, and a wealth of knowledge and experience, scale and multi-disciplinary capability, the project will be in good hands.”
SHW were responsible for the obtaining of Planning consent, Conservation Area consent & Building Regulations approval as well as preparing the specification of works, running the tender process, conducting post tender interviews and project management of the works on site.
Having negotiated the contract with the contractor, works commenced in October 2024 and were completed in February 2025. The works were completed within budget and delivered on time.
Adam Jordan, BCD Partner commented “It was a joy to be able to work together to save Meads Hall that plays such a large part in the community. From obtaining planning consent to conducting the post tender interviews, this was a job that I took great pleasure in completing and would be happy to work with the Trustees again if ever needed.”
